Cannabis, marijuana and weed: understanding the terms
Understand cannabis terminology, product formats and the difference between a strain name, a package label and batch-specific information.
Cannabis is the broader term
Cannabis, marijuana and weed often appear in the same conversation, but they are not exact equivalents in every context. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health uses cannabis as a broad term for products derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. Marijuana refers more specifically to plant material or products containing substantial amounts of THC.
That distinction matters because cannabis also includes plants with very little THC, commonly discussed as hemp. A page that mentions cannabis is not necessarily describing the same type of product as a marijuana listing. Legal definitions depend on the jurisdiction and context; everyday vocabulary alone does not establish a product’s legal status.
Where “weed” fits
Weed is an informal name for cannabis. It is not a package specification, laboratory result or separate product category. The CDC lists it among commonly used names for cannabis. On this website, cannabis is the main term, while the catalog identifies the actual format, such as flower, joints, cartridges or concentrates.
A broad name cannot tell you what is inside an individual package. Product identity, ingredients where applicable, package weight and the information printed on the particular label provide different pieces of the picture.
Separate the name from the specifications
In a Bubbas listing, the strain name identifies the name supplied with that product. The format describes how it is presented, and the package details describe the listed quantity. Those fields should be read separately. A familiar strain name does not establish a genetic lineage, a cannabinoid percentage or a predictable effect.
The same name can appear in more than one format or package size. Compare those entries by their stated specifications instead of assuming that one name means every detail is identical. An omitted specification means this catalog does not provide that information; it is not a zero value or a claim that the detail is unimportant.
- Name: the product or strain label used in the catalog.
- Format: the listed product type, such as flower or a joint.
- Package: the stated weight, unit count or combination of those details.
- Batch information: details that must be checked on the particular product label.
